Cheers to commenter Gonzo for choosing the star of tonight’s game. I couldn’t very well dedicate this scoreboard to Greg Dobbs, now could I? Honestly, though, as far losses go, this is the kind I have in mind if it has to go down that way.
With Lidge on the DL for a couple of weeks, expect sales of Tums in Central NJ to plummet, as Chris will not be needing them for awhile. On that note, my biggest disappointment (besides the outright loss) was that Madson’s debut as a closer was delayed for at least one night. During Lidge’s tumultous start to 2009 I have tended to vacillate between Uncle Cholly’s conservative Let-Lidge-Close opinion and the popular conventional wisdom of Madson-Is-Our-Guy. Now that #54 is out of the picture, we can potentially find out who’s right about what – potentially, barring anymore fuckin’ slug-bunts.
And let me just say this about that – I hate the Mets, but Santana is an animal. He basically willed himself the W tonight, giving up homer after uncharacteristic homer and eventually the lead, only to wrest it back by hitting a clutch RBI double in the 6th.
But enough about that douchebag. Fuck the Mets.
The bats were lively in a pitcher-friendly venue, and young J.A. Happ walked the line between shaky and solid. He gave up 6 hits, 4 walks and 4 runs over 5.1 innings, and after each of the 2 homers he surrendered he walked the very next batter. But the numbers betray his promising ability to persevere, as he didn’t look as though he would make it through 4 innings but kept his cool overall, pitched into and out of jams and made it to the sixth.
Greg Dobbs: swinging the bat is what made you the most formidable pinch-hitter for the past 2 seasons. So swing the bat.
I’m looking forward to another Hamels masterpiece to accompany the cracking lumber tomorrow night, as the Phillies will dismantle what can only be described on any given Santana-less day as a rickety, bullshit team.
On that note, I’d like to thank all who participated in tonight’s game chat and invite everyone back in 7 days or so, as Chris and I have decided to make this a weekly thing.
So keep reading daily to stay up-to-speed with all the goings-on here at Long Drive.
