Today the Phils made a couple of changes. Marcus Giles, who became much less important after Utley started playing Grapefruit League games, was released after a terrible spring. Also Mike Koplove, Jason Ellison, and Pablo Ozuna were told they won’t make the 25 man roster to start the season but will travel with the team to Citizens Bank Park for the On Deck Series. Lastly, Carlos Carrasco and John Mayberry Jr. have both been optioned to minor league camp. This leaves the 5th starter race officially down to Park and Happ. Also, this leaves Miguel Cairo as the only person left who could possibly get a bench spot if the Phils open with 11 pitchers. Here are the ways things could possibly shake out as per Todd Zolecki:
So how’s the 25-man roster going to look? Remember the Phillies don’t need a fifth starter until April 20, so they could open with 11 pitchers. If they open with 11, I think J.A. Happ makes the rotation, Chan Ho Park makes the bullpen and Cairo is the extra man on the bench. That would buy them time to move Geoff Jenkins or Matt Stairs before they need that fifth starter, which would move them back to 12 pitchers. If they open with 12 pitchers, I still think it’s Happ in the rotation and Park in the bullpen.
I see the first scenario as the most likely scenario to happen.
We Should Be GM’s found out the Phils players new walk up music.
The Fightins found a pretty ambidextrous fan who caught Werth’s BP home run ball while filming it.
