Well I guess a few well timed speeches to the players can sometimes do the trick. Today the Phils hosted the Cleveland Indians at Bright House Field and defeated them 6-4. Chad Durbin got the start and went 5 decent innings giving up 3 ER on 4 hits, one being a 2 run pinch hit homer courtesy of Aaron herr. Following Durbin was Condrey who threw a scoreless inning giving up only one hit. Next was J.C. Romero and then Vic Darensbourg who both threw scoreless innings. Finally, to close the game, out came Tom Gordon. He only gave up one run on a solo home run but it was questionable. I was only able to listen on the radio but apparently it hit the top of the fence and came back in play, it was close enough a call that Manuel argued but it was still ruled a HR. Offensively the Phils starters finally woke up. Here are the notables and their updated batting averages:

Jimmy Rollins 2-3 with a double .195 avg

Shane Victorino 2-2 both singles .268 avg

Chase Utley 2-2 with a triple .237 avg

Pat Burrell 1-3 .243 avg

Jayson Werth 1-3 .176 avg

Carlos Ruiz all singles 3-4 .473 avg
So hopefully everyone is starting to come around and we can forget the mess that has been happening the past couple weeks. Next up, tomorrow the Phils take on the Rays at 1:05pm at Bright House Field. Cole Hamels will get the start and we will also see the Grapefruit League debut of Kris Benson so everyone pay attention to that.

UPDATE: Well apparently Benson wasn’t supposed to pitch in relief tomorrow like Larry Anderson said on the radio. However he WAS scheduled to pitch in a minor league game…notice the WAS. He has been scratched from the start due to right shoulder tendinitis apparently. He says he felt some soreness in his shoulder during a bullpen session today. He had this to say:

“I’ve been through ups and downs through this whole thing,” Benson said. “This is minor compared to the other times that I’ve had issues. This is just a little blip, some fatigue that has to work it’s way out. It’s a precautionary thing where I want to give it some rest, and so do the trainers.”

He is also saying he’s resting so he can make his next scheduled start Sunday so we will see more then I suppose…
