Yesterday Charlie Manuel announced that Moyer will be our number 3 starter and pitch the 3rd game against the Nationals. I’m OK with this decision since Kendrick is struggling a bit in camp this year (16.43 ERA) and Moyer absolutely owned the Nationals on that wonderful September 30th day. Cholly had this to say:
“Kyle doesn’t have to prove anything to me,” Manuel said. “He came up and went 10-4, and the way he pitched, it will take more than a bad spring for him to lose his job. Poise was his big thing last year, and his confidence, and he shouldn’t let anything get him down. I’m the manager, and I like what he did for us. He’s our fourth starter.”
Brad Lidge threw off a mound again yesterday and is still feeling good. They now say he will start fielding and then hopefully pitch in either a minor league game or a simulated game by next week. It’s looking more and more like he will be ready come opening day.
In other news the Phils dropped another spring training game yesterday to the Reds 6-1. I know these games don’t count and everything but this is getting old. Can’t they win at least a couple more? Dobbs plated the Phils lone run on a 2 out single. Ryan Madson had the start and went 3 IP and only gave up one run bringing his spring ERA to a respectable 2.57, a lot better then most other Phillies pitchers. Rule 5 pick up Travis Blackley also threw 3 innings and gave up 2 ER and bringing his spring ERA to 8.22 and his chances of the 5th starter job to about 0.
The Phillies take on the Reds tonight with Jamie Moyer getting the start. Hopefully grandpa keeps up his spring success and gets the Phils a damn win.
