2008 PHILLIES PREDICTIONS AND EXPECTATIONS

These are a few things I either think or want to happen in the 2008 season…

1. Cole Hamels starts at least 32 games and wins at least 20 of them.

-The guy hasn’t been healthy much throughout his career, including last year when he missed a month. He had publicly cried saying the Phils needed a chiropractor to travel with the team on the road. The front office politely obliged and now he has his wish. That said, I now expect him to stay healthy. The only injury i might let slide is one related to another bar fight, because sometimes Cole Hamels has to shake a bitch…or is that Myers? But i digress, i simply want him to be healthy and pitch like we know he can…

2. The platoon of Jayson Werth and Geoff Jenkins offensively out perform Aaron Rowand.

-I personally will miss Rowand and his nitty gritty attitude toward the sport of baseball. When I go to the Phils/Giants game this year at CBP I will give him a standing ovation. Not only for playing his heart out for this team but if for little else, making that amazing catch and stealing a victory from the Muts and also handing Gavin Floyd his only win the Phils actually benefited from. That aside, he did have an excellent year for the team last year but it is not one that is going to be repeated, especially in the spacious AT&T Park. This year i can see Jenkins and Werth combining for about a .280 BA around 28 HR and 110 RBIs. Jenkins isn’t exactly the best hitter but he can rake against RHP. His stats against righties in 355 AB in 2007 were .262 BA 18 HR and 50 RBI to the tune of a .808 OPS. Werth’s stats against lefties in 88 AB in 2007 were .375 BA 5 HR and 22 RBI with a 1.058 OPS. With this platoon i see the offense holding steady and maybe increasing with the pick up of Pedro Feliz at 3rd.

3. Brad Lidge will get it together and have a good year.

-Lidge has struggled the past two seasons to say the least. After establishing himself in 2005 as one of the best closers in baseball, he seemed to be considerably irked by the moonshot Albert Pujols hit off him in the 2005 NLCS. Last year Lidge lost his closer role in Houston rather early in the season only to gain it back later on. Even though he has struggled so much in the past I still know his stuff is top notch. He has all the tools to completely turn things around in 2008. These are some of the stats that lead me to this conclusion:

All-Time Strikeouts Per 9 Leaders:

1. Brad Lidge ……………………………………………………….12.59

2. Rob Dibble ……………………………………………………….12.17

3. Francisco Rodriguez ………………………………………..11.97

4. Billy Fagner ………………………………………………………11.84

5. Matt Mantei ……………………………………………………..11.05

In addition to that his BAA was a mere .209 and K/9 11.8 in 2007. These stats lead me to believe he is more than capable of returning to form in the 2008 season. I do understand though, that it’s mostly his mental makeup that is being brought into question. BUT that is what the change of scenery to Philly is supposed to set straight. Only time will tell.

4. Burrell’s contract year will be like every other year.

-Pat the bat over the years has not exactly lived up to the hype of being a #1 overall draft pick so in turn he has caught the wrath of the Philly faithful(not phaithful if you thought that punch yourself in the mouth). Lots of fans are hoping in his walk year that he will perform to a level that will make us fans forget all about his past struggles. To this I say nay, I believe he will have the same ups and downs as always but not as down as last year when his BA was floating around the Mendoza line. He will sit the occasional game while slumping also slap the ball the other way when he’s on a hot streak. I do however see him hitting to a slight bump in his BA to around .282 and I also believe he will break 100 RBI and 30 HR. Although these are good numbers they aren’t what some are expecting in his contract year. I just don’t see him putting up 40+ HR and 120 RBI to the tune of a .300 BA. It would be nice but i don’t see it happening. Especially with Jayson Werth and Greg Dobbs most likely being put in as defensive replacements for him throughout the year.

So those are my not so bold predictions for the 2008 season. Please comment and let me know your opinion. Oh I also welcome Muts fans to post on here too with your homerish statements and Johan Santana humping comments.
