SO TAGUCHI SIGNING FIVE MORE AUTOGRAPHS THAN HE SIGNED IN PHILLY
While surfing the net in search of mementos from the Phillies World Series run, I came across a photo of a former Fightin’s outfielder who’s receiving (obscure) rockstar treatment with a new city. No, not Pat the Bat. You may remember the player pictured above as So Taguchi, backup outfielder for the 2008 World Champion Phillies. No? He had that ninth-inning, pinch-hit, game-tying double in the Phillies July comeback against the Mets at Shea Stadium and that…..well…..it was a REALLY nice double. Well, anyway, the former Phil was signed to a minor league contract by the Cubs in the offseason and if he is able to crack Chicago’s roster out of Spring Training, he’ll earn a hefty $900,000. He may be the least memorable and most detested Phillie from the 2008 playoff roster, but every player from last season holds a special place in my heart for bringing Philly a World Series title and ending the city’s championship drought. So, here’s hoping Taguchi makes the team, attains the 900k bonus, and gets an appreciative (but modest) ovation when he returns to Philly in a Cubs’ uni.
The original photo (along with other Cubs’ spring training shots) can be found at the Chicago Tribune online.
